The mobility sector is currently facing massive digital disruptions. The same is true for urban parking. As the literal last mile is still very much offline. Now different concepts go head to head in the race to solve parking for drivers globally. In Europe a new breed of solution is being field tested - crowdsourcing through smartphones.
The vision is to allocate parking spaces for arriving drivers. So they don’t need to circle the block. Studies show that 30% of urban traffic are parking search related. Matching vacating drivers with arriving drivers would eradicate this. Also for a future where self-driving cars park themselves availability information is dearly needed. The Berlin based company ParkTAG runs a large field test for the European Commission. The aim is to quantify the impact real-time parking allocation has on urban mobility.
With unequivocal voting from the audience ParkTAG was named best Start-up in the 13th annual TU-Automotive Europe awards. Industry experts forecast that it won’t be long before all cars have an automated parking finder. Quite likely long before cars drive fully autonomous in cities. ParkTAG makes such a system available to anybody with a smartphone.
